The Art Gallery
I am a self-taught artist. My medium of choice is a #2 pencil and a sheet of typing paper, with a bit of facial tissue or toilet paper or a cotton swab for shading. I've done a little dabbling in acrylic painting (the source of the background for this page), and I've tried using colored pencils, but this seems to work best for me.
Below, you'll find a collection of sketches I've done over the years, from my college days (beginning in 1970) to the present, including illustrations for some of my works.
Short Story Illustrations
The unnamed heroine and her young companion flee from their rooms as they seek the truth about the man who found a way...outside.
Track of the Wolf
Ezekiel Marcotte, fallen to his hands and knees before the massive wolf print. An impressionistic sketch suggesting his haunting by Nahim-Tekoa and the great wolf spirit.
The Eros Variations
First Movement: Rigid, but threatening to lose control
Glass Comet was better than good....Their lead guitarist was a pale, cadaverous, intense young man with hypnotic eyes, a voice that could flash from a purr to a scream, and fingers that ripped out crippling runs on the strings....And their keyboardist, a small, muscular Hispanic with eyes of fire and a gleaming lion's mane, attacked his keyboards with just the right touch of showmanship....

This time he heard a voice murmuring inside, so he pushed the door open. "David?" he began. "...I need to talk to someone, and I thought...."
He stopped. In the dim dawn light...he could see that David wasn't alone...."I'm sorry," he mumbled..."
David's confused fumbling pulled the sheet askew, and his lover turned over....It took a moment, but Kelden suddenly placed him. Michael Bachman, the lawyer who'd taken the Penthouse....

Second Movement: Slightly manic
....Kathy stood with her head bowed and her arms wrapped tightly around her, her feet surrounded by glittering chunks of glass. "You might go back to your party," he shouted, "and offer yourself to some of them. Maybe they'll settle for you!"
Kel insults Kathy Baylor after the Halloween party
She screamed again and he turned back.... Several of the other men, attracted by the sound of the struggle, had staggered back to find Laurie half naked. Kelden watched as one seized her arms and another stripped her of her remaining clothing. Then all converged like sharks to finish what he'd begun. He backed away, fighting nausea, and nearly tumbled backwards down a short flight of steps. No one noticed him; they were too intent on their victim.

David stood slowly. Kelden had seen him angry before, but those had been brief, spectacular fireworks-bursts of heat and sound....He'd never seen the rage that now blazed in David's eyes....He'd said too much....David might attack him. In a way, something in him hoped he would.
"You must think awfully highly of yourself." David's voice was low and thick. "Wonderful Kelden Scott, irresistible to woman and man alike...."

Third Movement: Contemplative, but intense
Occasionally, we're granted a glimpse of ourselves as seen from without. It's a dark gift, for we rarely think of ourselves as worse than we really are, and the truth, unfiltered through our egos, can be devastating. For one brief, bleak moment, Kelden...saw an arrogant, hedonistic, self-centered bastard. Something exploded behind his eyes, and a strangled cry tore itself from his throat....
Kel in the Pine Street apartment
Kelden lost his balance and sent them both sprawling. They lay together, panting, then he giggled again. "'Our nada, who art in nada,'" he intoned, "'hallowed be thy nada'. Hemingway," he added, then fell silent. After a moment he murmured, "God damn it, Tony, I got no one, and it's all my fault." His voice caught, and then, suddenly he was sobbing.
Tony pulled him close and held him tight. "No, man," he whispered. "You got me. You got me."
A drunken Kel raging on Tony's apartment floor
"....I wandered into the back hall, and she was there."
"Yes, I think so. Yes."
"What was she doing?"
"I think -" Kelden closed his eyes. "Yes...she was leaning against the wall, running her hands over her body."
"Did you approach her?"
Careful, thought Kelden, Just as you rehearsed it. Don't get trapped....

Fourth Movement: Driving
"Brother, you can be set free from sexual bondage!" An eager young man of college age, clutching a Bible, blocked Kelden's way.
"I'm not your brother," Kelden answered mildly, "and I'm not into bondage. Yet." He sidestepped, but the young man was in front of him again.

Paige leaned toward Kelden. "Come on," she said quietly. "Let's go break down some walls."
Together, hand in hand, they walked up the aisle.
